Our Featured Pet...

This site features all the wonderful cats available for adoption that were taken during the May 1, 2003 major cruelty case in Denton, MD. Please read on....

On May 1, 2003, the Caroline County Humane Society in Ridgely, Maryland made national headlines with an animal hoarding case, dubbed ?Operation May Day?, in which 309 live animals were removed from a local home in Denton. Eighteen dogs and 292 cats were removed from the home after reports were made to the Humane Society concerning the condition and welfare of the animals. Tragically, many other animals at the site were found dead. The case reached national attention as the largest extraction of animals from a residential home in U.S. history.

Although many of these animals could not be saved due to health status, the Caroline County Humane Society went above and beyond in efforts to help them. Accommodations were made for the 300 cats and dogs, and hospice care was provided for all of the terminally ill animals until a hearing could determine custody of the animals. Mother cats with tiny kittens were moved to a separate nursery facility at Grateful Paws, Inc. in Grasonville, MD, to care for them properly. The Talbot County Humane Society in Easton, MD opened its doors to house many of the dogs. On June 6th, after the custody hearing, many of the animals were humanely euthanized to end their suffering.

The remaining cats were put into a mandatory quarantine and treatment plans were developed to restore them to good health. Every cat was monitored daily for health and behavior. Each cat was given vaccinations and was spayed or neutered. More importantly, each cat was tested every four weeks for Feline Leukemia and FIV. The fourth and final testing occurred on August 4th. After just over three months, the cats are now considered ADOPTABLE. Many thanks to the Humane Society of the United States, the State and local police authorities, Natural Resources, the Talbot County Humane Society, The Cat Hospital Eastern Shore, and each and every volunteer. Bless all who have made donations towards the effort ?

Grateful Paws has worked hand in hand from Day #1 with CCHS. We are firmly committed to finding a home for each and every one. We remain in great need of monetary donations to support the continued care of these cats.

If you are unable to adopt, please consider sponsoring a cat that you choose. We will send you updates on "your" cat, and let you know when that cat is adopted. For information on how to become a sponsor, please call or email us.

VOLUNTEERS!

Volunteers are always needed - but unfortunately, they are not as plentiful as homeless pets! If you have some time to donate, we have an awesome number of volunteer opportunities, from helping to care for cats and kittens, to joining our "Nimble Paws Network" of crafters and sew-ers who help to make fundraising items, to putting up posters in the community for our mobile clinic. Don't be shy! Computer skills, marketing skills, carpentry skills - you name it and we can put your skills to work for the cats.
